Rivian Forms RAD Engineering Team to Turn Extreme Testing Into Real-World EV Improvements

Rivian Adventure Department (RAD): Pushing the Limits of Rivian Vehicles

Rivian has officially introduced the Rivian Adventure Department (RAD) team as part of its engineering endeavors. The primary focus of RAD is to test the company’s trucks and SUVs in extreme conditions, extracting valuable lessons from each event to enhance the production vehicles.

Originally an informal testing group, RAD has now been integrated into the Rivian engineering team. Their main task is to subject Rivian vehicles to harsh environments in order to stress-test every system within the cars.

The RAD team has already made significant achievements, including winning a class at the 2023 Rebelle Off-Road Rally and setting a production EV truck record at Pikes Peak. Rivian views these events as opportunities for real-world research and development, incorporating the lessons learned into future software updates and hardware improvements.

One notable example is the application of a RAD lesson from the Rebelle Rally win to production vehicles. This led to the development of a new “Desert Rally” Drive mode, enhancing off-road maneuverability.

To conquer Colorado’s Pikes Peak with the R1 truck, the team developed custom software that allowed real-time adjustments to the truck’s performance. This agile software tweaking enabled the truck to navigate tight corners with the precision of a sports car.

The software enhancements were later integrated into the Gen 2 Quad Motor vehicles through an update. This update introduced a customizable drive mode interface, empowering drivers to adjust parameters like power output, torque split, stability control, and regeneration.

Rivian also engaged the RAD team in the 2026 FAT Ice Race, providing an ideal setting for testing on frozen ground.

By entering the competition with the Quad Motor Rs1, the RAD team closely monitored the vehicle’s performance. Rivian’s participation in the race was not merely for accolades but to gather crucial data on the car’s handling in extreme icy conditions.

The insights gathered from these testing scenarios were utilized to refine software codes, benefiting all Rivian owners through updates. These updates enhance the handling and safety of the vehicles in various driving conditions, including snowy terrains.
