ChatGPT app launches for CarPlay on iOS 26.4

Apple recently rolled out iOS 26.4, introducing support for voice-based AI apps on CarPlay for the first time.

Shortly after this update, OpenAI announced an enhanced version of the ChatGPT app for iPhone, now fully compatible with CarPlay through a dedicated app.

ChatGPT app for CarPlay now accessible

Apple imposes restrictions on the types of apps permitted on CarPlay for safety and design reasons. Unlike standard iPhone apps, CarPlay apps must adhere to templates provided by Apple within the CarPlay framework.

With the latest iOS update, Apple expanded its list of supported apps to include “voice-based conversational apps.”

The CarPlay edition of ChatGPT is centered on voice interactions, eliminating any text display. Users can engage with the app through voice commands similar to the iPhone version, with options to end conversations and adjust volume.

This aligns with Apple’s directive that voice-based apps on CarPlay should prioritize voice interaction, avoiding text and imagery in responses.

Apple states, “Voice-based conversational apps must have a primary modality of voice upon launch; and after launch, appropriately respond to questions or requests and perform actions.”

ChatGPT leads the way as the first major AI app to introduce a dedicated CarPlay version. To access the new ChatGPT CarPlay app, users must update the iPhone app to the latest version available on the App Store and ensure their device runs iOS 26.4.
