Revolutionizing Performance: Porsche’s New W12 Engine Unveiled

Porsche Develops New W12 Engine Despite Bentley’s Phase-Out
Recently, Porsche has made headlines by filing a patent for a cutting-edge W12 engine. This decision comes shortly after Bentley, another prominent member of the VW Group, discontinued the use of W12 engines in its lineup.
The W12 engine that powered the Bentley Continental GT was essentially a unique configuration involving the fusion of two VR6 engines. Porsche’s take on the W12 engine, however, introduces a more intricate design. It features two banks of cylinders in a V-configuration, with a third bank positioned between them, setting it apart from its predecessors.
According to Porsche, “The cylinders of the internal combustion engine are arranged in a W-shape. Each cylinder head is equipped with at least one intake port and one exhaust port. The intake port connects to an air plenum for airflow, while the exhaust port links to an exhaust gas discharge device.”
“The air plenum is strategically positioned on the upper side, extensively covering it to facilitate air flow into the intake channels from above. This allows air to be drawn in directly in a straight line by the reciprocating piston of the engine, which moves substantially in an upward and downward motion within the cylinder. The air chamber features an opening for flow connection with the intake port, oriented towards the crankshaft.”
Porsche’s investment in this innovative W12 engine indicates a commitment to high-performance engines within the VW Group lineup. The possibility of this engine going into production remains uncertain and is open to speculation.
