Revolutionizing the Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Introducing the AMG Flat-Plane Crank V8 in the 2026 Redesign
Mercedes-Benz Set to Unveil Updated S-Class Sedan with Powerful V8 Engine
Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to reveal a significantly updated version of its flagship S-Class sedan this year. The new model will come equipped with a more powerful V8 petrol engine, featuring a flat-plane crankshaft, a first for the automaker.
This update is said to be the most extensive in the S-Class’s history, promising a refreshed exterior design, a revamped interior, and the high-performance V8 engine.
The inclusion of a flat-plane crankshaft in the V8 engine not only provides a unique sound but also offers performance benefits such as reduced weight and increased revving capabilities.
The new engine is part of Mercedes-Benz’s efforts to enhance the driving experience of the S-Class, ensuring a more dynamic and responsive performance.
According to reports, the updated S-Class will feature the latest M177 V8 engine, replacing the previous model’s powertrain. The new engine will maintain its 4.0-litre capacity and twin turbochargers but will now sport a flat-plane crankshaft design.
Mercedes-Benz is also introducing a mild-hybrid setup with the M177 engine, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce emissions in line with current environmental standards.
Enhanced Performance and Acceleration
The updated V8 engine is expected to deliver a power boost, with output figures projected to increase from 370kW to around 395kW. This enhancement will enable the new S-Class to achieve a 0-100km/h acceleration time of approximately 4.0 seconds.
The upcoming S-Class lineup will feature six-cylinder engines for lower-spec models, while details regarding the performance-focused S63 AMG variant are yet to be officially confirmed.
Continued Commitment to V8 Engines
Despite the industry’s shift towards electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz remains devoted to developing V8 and V12 internal combustion engines. The brand’s chief technology officer emphasized the importance of maintaining a diverse engine lineup to cater to different customer preferences.
Mercedes-Benz’s decision to enhance its V8 offerings comes in response to customer feedback and market demand, signaling a strategic approach to balancing traditional engine technologies with modern advancements.
Future of Performance Vehicles
While Mercedes-Benz continues to evolve its internal combustion engines, the brand is also investing in electric and hybrid technologies for its future lineup. The development of high-performance electric models, like the Concept AMG GT XX, demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
With a dual strategy in place, Mercedes-AMG aims to expand its electric vehicle offerings while retaining the essence of its performance-oriented internal combustion engine vehicles. This balanced approach reflects the brand’s adaptability and forward-thinking mindset.
