Revolutionizing the Road: The Future Lineup of BMW Electric Models
BMW’s electric strategy is often referred to as a “transition,” but in reality, it is a meticulously planned and deliberate approach. Over the coming years, BMW will be operating two distinct EV architectures simultaneously: the existing CLAR platform and the all-new Neue Klasse platform, internally known as NCAR. Understanding the differences between these architectures is crucial in comprehending the timing of upcoming models and why some cannot afford to wait. It is essential to note that the technology and design of the Neue Klasse will be shared across both architectures.
CLAR, which stands for Cluster Architecture, was not originally designed as a pure electric platform. It is BMW’s modular, rear-wheel-drive-based architecture that has accommodated combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen, and EVs. This flexibility is both a strength and a limitation. While it allows for various powertrain options, the design constraints around engines and transmissions impact battery placement, cabin proportions, and efficiency compared to a dedicated EV platform. On the other hand, the Neue Klasse platform is BMW’s first high-volume, fully electric architecture designed from the ground up around sixth-generation battery technology, structural battery integration, centralized computing, and an innovative 800V electrical system.
Neue Klasse is positioned to become the core of BMW’s lineup, starting with the 3 Series and X3 segments before expanding to other models. The first production Neue Klasse SUV will be the iX3, followed by a long-wheelbase variant primarily for the Chinese market. Additionally, a sportier iX4 is expected to join the lineup, aligning with BMW’s SUV-coupe strategy. On the sedan side, the NA0 i3 will replace the CLAR-based electric 3 Series, followed by the NA1 i3 Touring. The lineup will further expand to include coupe and convertible body styles with the NA2 i4 Coupe and NA3 i4 Convertible, highlighting BMW’s commitment to emotional body styles.
In contrast, CLAR will continue to support large SUVs like the iX5, iX6, and iX7, catering to customers who prioritize space, towing capability, and comfort over cutting-edge efficiency. The ALPINA iX7 will demonstrate the value of CLAR for niche high-end products. Additionally, BMW M’s electric future will begin with models like the ZA5 X3 M electric, ZA7 X4 M electric, and ZA2 M4 Electric, leveraging Neue Klasse’s capabilities for performance-oriented models.
This dual-platform strategy provides BMW with strategic flexibility in a rapidly evolving EV landscape. While Neue Klasse is optimized for high-volume segments, efficiency, and software-defined vehicle behavior, CLAR remains ideal for large premium SUVs and markets with slower EV adoption rates. Eventually, Neue Klasse could replace CLAR entirely for EVs, but for now, this dual-platform approach allows BMW to adapt quickly to changing market conditions while continuing to meet customer demands.
