Revolutionizing Your Video Calls: Turn Your Pixel Phone into a Switch 2 Webcam

You can now use Pixel phones as a Switch 2 webcam

Using Pixel Smartphones as Webcams for Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo had initially claimed that the Switch 2 was compatible with most USB webcams. However, our testing revealed that Pixel smartphones were unable to function as webcams upon the console’s launch, even when the device’s settings were adjusted to the USB webcam mode introduced by Google with Android 14. Eventually, Switch 2 users discovered that Android phones and iPhones could be utilized as webcams with the assistance of additional hardware such as USB-C to HDMI adapters and HDMI capture cables.

Fortunately, the need for extra hardware to use a Pixel smartphone as a Switch 2 webcam is now obsolete. In our testing, we successfully connected a Pixel 9 Pro directly to the Switch 2’s top USB-C port using a single cable. After switching the USB preferences to “Webcam” mode, we were able to employ the smartphone as the camera for GameChat. This feature is particularly beneficial for multiplayer games like Mario Kart World, as GameChat enables players to communicate with competitors worldwide and view them overlaid on a livestream if a webcam is utilized.

The exact reason behind this newfound compatibility is unclear. It remains uncertain whether recent updates from Google or Nintendo facilitated this function. The Pixel 9 Pro used in our test was operating on the Android 16 December release. Nevertheless, this development is a welcome enhancement for individuals who frequently travel with their Switch 2 and prefer not to carry a separate webcam wherever they go.
