Russia Bans FaceTime: The End of Video Calling in the Country

Apple’s stance against government interference in India is commendable, but iPhone users in Russia may not be as fortunate. According to Reuters, Russian authorities have ordered the blocking of FaceTime in the country, citing its alleged use in criminal activities.

“Law enforcement agencies claim that FaceTime is being exploited to coordinate terrorist attacks, recruit individuals for criminal activities, and perpetrate fraud against Russian citizens,” stated Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communication regulator, in an email to Reuters.

FaceTime joins the list of foreign tech platforms facing restrictions from the state communications watchdog in Russia, which has already targeted YouTube, WhatsApp, and Telegram. Despite lacking concrete evidence, Russian officials seem to be driving users towards a state-owned app named MAX, potentially for increased surveillance capabilities.

While the specifics of Apple’s response to Russia’s demands remain unclear, reports indicate that Moscow residents are encountering difficulties in making FaceTime voice calls. This contrasts with Apple’s approach in other regions where the app is either blocked entirely or modified to comply with local regulations.

Russian authorities likely blocked specific data protocols used by FaceTime to establish connections, a tactic similar to their actions against other services like YouTube and Roblox. Messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram have also faced scrutiny for their encryption practices and non-compliance with law enforcement requests.

Although users could potentially bypass these restrictions using a VPN, it remains uncertain if Russian authorities have also targeted VPN protocols.
