Apple is renowned for incorporating life-saving features into its devices, with recent incidents showcasing the effectiveness of Emergency SOS via satellite. In Lake Tahoe, this feature helped locate six avalanche survivors, while in Kentucky, it led to the successful rescue of a lost family.

The Apple Watch’s health and emergency technology, including heart health alerts and Fall Detection, often garners attention. The Apple Watch Ultra’s siren even saved a diver’s life by activating unexpectedly after a rapid ascent. These instances highlight the potential life-saving capabilities of Apple’s devices.

A recent incident involving Michael Harris from Bothell, Washington, underscores the importance of carrying an iPhone or Apple Watch in potentially hazardous situations. Buried in an avalanche at Stevens Pass Ski Resort for four hours, Harris was trapped with minimal mobility. Despite having his devices with him, he was unable to access them due to his restricted movement.

Unable to reach his iPhone or Apple Watch, which were vibrating in his pocket, Harris relied on his wife’s intuition and use of the Find My app to locate him. The ski patrol was then able to rescue him, despite his injuries.

The incident also emphasizes the role of connectivity in such emergencies. Harris’s proximity to cellular service enabled the Find My app to accurately pinpoint his location. Additionally, newer Apple devices support Find My via satellite, requiring users to actively report their location or initiate Emergency SOS features.

For individuals venturing off the grid or engaging in outdoor activities, wearing an Apple Watch or carrying an iPhone is crucial. Setting up Siri to respond to voice commands even when the screen is covered can enhance usability in emergencies. Familiarizing oneself with Messages via satellite and Emergency SOS features is also recommended for safety.
