A former radio host who suffered health issues and created a gut-friendly toothpaste has successfully raised €2 million (£1.8 million) to expand international sales of Alcester-based Gutology and its Oral Biome+ toothpaste.

Ollie Gallant, the founder of Gutology and host of the Gutology Podcast, secured funding from Midlands Engine Investment Fund II, Mercia Ventures, Active Partners, and existing angel investors.

Ollie emphasizes, “Traditional toothpaste has focused on killing bacteria, but we now understand the vital role of microorganisms. This funding allows us to enhance oral care innovation and create products that are effective and seamlessly fit into daily routines.”

Gutology’s funding round places the oral care startup within a broader microbiome-focused funding trend covered by EU-Startups in 2025, encompassing consumer health and clinical applications.

In the UK, BoobyBiome secured €2.8 million to expand infant health solutions based on breast milk microbiome research. Meanwhile, Belgium-based MRM Health received €55 million in Series B funding to advance its microbiome-derived biotherapeutic pipeline targeting inflammatory and immune-related diseases.

Collectively, these funding rounds represent approximately €58 million invested in the microbiome and related health sectors during this period, indicating sustained investor interest in a range of health products.

Within this landscape, Gutology’s funding reflects a smaller UK-based investment in microbiome science, focusing on oral care and gut health rather than clinical drug development.

Rafael Joseph of Mercia Ventures comments, “Consumers are increasingly recognizing the connection between the gut microbiome and overall health, seeking credible alternative products. Gutology has established itself as a leader in this field, with a strong brand gaining rapid momentum.”

“We were drawn to their authentic story and the engagement of their social media and podcast audience. This funding will propel their international expansion and solidify their leadership position.”

Gutology was founded by Ollie, a former radio host, who discovered the importance of ‘good bacteria’ in maintaining health after battling digestive issues. The podcast was launched in 2019 with nutritional expert Julia Davies, leading to the debut product in 2024.

The Oral Biome+ toothpaste contains hydroxyapatite (HAP) and Truebiotic parabiotics, supporting the mouth and gut microbiome balance without disruption.

Bethan Bannister, Senior Investment Manager at the British Business Bank, states, “We are delighted to invest in Gutology, a company addressing gut health issues in a unique way. It’s encouraging to see the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II backing innovative solutions for customers in need.”

“We anticipate a successful partnership with Ollie and his team as the business expands.”

The toothpaste now ranks in the top 10 on Amazon UK and is the best-selling toothpaste at Planet Organic, according to the company.

Gutology, with ten employees, offers a full oral care range and sells directly to customers online and through specialty health stores.

The funding will facilitate partnerships with major retailers, expansion into the US and German markets, and increased clinical research for new product development.

Plans include expanding the product line to include healthcare and home cleaning products, with the creation of five new jobs in the coming year.

Anna Sweetman of Active Partners adds, “Gutology is poised to lead the shift towards microbiome-aligned personal care products, from body care to household items. We’re thrilled to support their growth journey.”
