Signal’s secure message backups arrive on iOS

Signal Introduces Secure Backups for iOS Users

Signal has recently unveiled a new feature for iOS users that allows them to securely backup and restore their messages, providing peace of mind in case of a lost or damaged phone. This feature, available for free, enables users to store up to 100MB of text messages and up to 45 days’ worth of photos, videos, GIFs, and files.

For those looking for more comprehensive backup options, Signal also offers a paid plan priced at $1.99 per month. This plan allows users to backup all text messages and up to 100GB of media beyond the initial 45-day limit. Secure backups were initially launched for Android devices in September, utilizing end-to-end encryption to safeguard users’ messages and media. To access the backup, users need a 64-character recovery key that is generated on their device.

Enabling secure backups on Signal is a straightforward process. Users simply need to navigate to the Settings menu, select Backups, and then proceed to Setup > Enable Backups. It is essential to securely store the recovery key provided during this process, as Signal cannot assist in recovering lost keys. Once the recovery key is confirmed, users can choose their preferred plan and Signal will begin storing their messages and media.

Signal has announced plans to extend secure backups to its desktop application, allowing users to transfer encrypted messaging history seamlessly between Android, iOS, and desktop platforms in the future.
