Selfie Count: A Year in Review with Google Photos Recap
Google has introduced several new features to its year-end Photos app throwback experience, including a selfie count, integration with CapCut, and enhanced photo curation capabilities. The Google Photos Recap now offers insights and graphics that summarize users’ photo-taking habits throughout the year, following a revamped presentation format introduced in 2024 that bears resemblance to Spotify Wrapped.
The Recap feature is now live and can be found in the Google Photos Memories carousel, as well as being pinned in the Collections tab for the duration of December. One of the new insights for the 2025 Recap is a selfie count, utilizing facial recognition technology to reveal the number of self-portraits users have taken. This feature could be an eye-opener for those who frequently strive for the perfect selfie shot. Additionally, users in the US with Gemini features enabled in Photos will receive personalized insights on their standout hobbies and top highlights from the year.
Another noteworthy addition is the ability for users to hide specific individuals or photos from appearing in their Recap. After selecting what to exclude, users can regenerate an updated version of the Recap that better suits their preferences for viewing or sharing. Sharing options have also been enhanced, with a carousel of short videos and collages now included at the end of the Recap for easy sharing on social media or in group chats. Users can now also directly share their Recap to their WhatsApp status.
A new CapCut integration has been implemented to streamline the editing process for the Recap. By selecting the “Edit with CapCut” button at the end of the presentation, users can export the Recap to CapCut and access exclusive Google Photos templates for quick customization. This integration aims to provide users with more creative control over their Recap experience.
In conclusion, Google’s latest updates to the Photos app Recap feature offer users more customization options, enhanced sharing capabilities, and a seamless editing experience. With the introduction of features like selfie counts, personalized insights, and CapCut integration, users can now create and share their year-end photo summaries with ease and creativity.
