Sending 1,000 Ashes to Space: Affordable Space Burial Service Launching in 2027
Ryan Mitchell’s Journey to Space Beyond: A Unique Memorial Service
Ryan Mitchell, a former manufacturing engineer for NASA and Blue Origin, founded Space Beyond after a moment of reflection under the night sky. His startup aims to offer a unique memorial service by sending people’s ashes to space using CubeSat technology.
While attending a family member’s ash-spreading ceremony, Mitchell realized the potential for a better way to commemorate loved ones. This led to the creation of Space Beyond’s “Ashes to Space” program, which will launch up to 1,000 individuals’ ashes on a SpaceX Falcon 9 mission in October 2027.
Space Beyond distinguishes itself by offering affordable space burial options, starting at just $249. By utilizing the rideshare model and CubeSat technology, the startup has democratized access to space for memorial purposes.

Despite suggestions to increase prices, Mitchell is focused on providing a meaningful service rather than maximizing profits. Space Beyond’s CubeSat can accommodate around one gram of ashes per customer, considering weight limitations for space launches.
Customers should be aware that the CubeSat will only remain in orbit for five years before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere. This limited duration ensures a symbolic ending as the satellite and ashes burn up upon re-entry.
Space Beyond’s CubeSat will orbit in a “sun-synchronous orbit” at a high altitude, allowing customers to track its location and observe it in the night sky. While the satellite’s lifespan is short, customers can find comfort in the symbolic journey their loved one’s ashes undertake.
Space Beyond emphasizes the responsible disposal of ashes in space to prevent debris clouds that could endanger other spacecraft. Customers are encouraged to cherish the symbolic journey of their loved one’s ashes and decide how to honor the rest of the remains.
Despite initial doubts, Mitchell’s passion for the project persisted, leading him to pursue Space Beyond as his next venture. His dedication to the concept and rigorous engineering approach solidified his decision to create a unique and affordable space burial service.
Ultimately, Space Beyond offers a distinctive way to commemorate loved ones by sending their ashes to space, providing a meaningful and symbolic journey that embodies the wonder of the cosmos.
