Siri’s Promising AI Future: A Reassuring Update from Cook
Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company’s upgraded Siri virtual personal assistant is set to launch in 2026, with potential AI partnerships on the horizon. In an interview with CNBC’s Steve Kovach prior to the fiscal Q4 earnings announcement, Cook discussed the progress of Siri and hinted at future collaborations.
Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software, Craig Federighi, has emphasized the integration of ChatGPT and other AI extensions into Apple Intelligence. While discussions with Google about incorporating Google’s Gemini are underway, no official partnership has been confirmed. Cook expressed Apple’s intention to collaborate with more AI companies in the future.
Apple has been quietly expanding support for third-party models in Image Playground, introducing new ChatGPT styles in iOS 26 and laying the groundwork for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) framework in iOS 26.1. The MCP framework, developed by Anthropic, facilitates interoperability between AI models, tools, and apps.
The delay in Siri’s AI upgrade has faced criticism, with promises of enhanced personal context understanding and app control. Initially announced as “Personalized Siri” at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024, the rollout was delayed due to limitations in the first-generation AI architecture. Apple is transitioning Siri to a second-generation architecture, which may take additional time.
Apple’s AI talent has also migrated to other companies, leading to extended deadlines and class action lawsuits over the delayed Siri features. One lawsuit, filed in March, seeks compensation for customers who were misled by Apple’s marketing and highlights the delayed arrival of the advanced Siri features.
Despite challenges, Apple remains committed to enhancing Siri through new partnerships and ecosystem development. Cook’s reassurances about Apple’s AI roadmap indicate a continued effort to bring the next-generation Siri to fruition.
