Cloud Imperium Games Data Breach: What You Need to Know

Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), the renowned game developer responsible for Star Citizen and Squadron 42, recently disclosed a security breach that occurred in January. The California-based company, founded in 2012 by Chris Roberts, the mastermind behind the Wing Commander franchise, operates multiple game studios with a workforce exceeding 700 employees.

While CIG made headlines in 2012 with the announcement of the ambitious multiplayer space-simulation game Star Citizen, progress has been marred by delays. Despite a successful Kickstarter campaign raising over $2 million, the game remains in “early access” even after 14 years.

On January 21, 2026, CIG fell victim to a sophisticated cyberattack, resulting in unauthorized access to certain user account information. The compromised data included basic details such as metadata, contact information, usernames, dates of birth, and names. Fortunately, sensitive information like credentials or financial data was not accessed.

CIG reassured users that no evidence suggests the leaked data has been made public. The breach was limited to read-only access, with no passwords or financial details compromised. The company is actively monitoring the situation to prevent further incidents and detect any potential data leaks.

Although CIG downplayed the impact of the breach, emphasizing no risk to user safety, the exposed personal information could be exploited by threat actors for phishing attacks. It is crucial for affected users to remain vigilant against potential cyber threats.

BleepingComputer reached out to Cloud Imperium Games for further details, including whether affected users have been notified and if any ransom demands were made. However, a response from the company was not immediately available.
