Stealth Mode: Enhancing Security with Invisible Password Login on Windows Updates
Windows 11 Update Causing Disappearance of Password Sign-In Option
Microsoft has issued a warning to Windows 11 users regarding recent updates that may result in the password sign-in option disappearing from the lock screen. Despite this, the functionality of the button remains intact.
Users of Windows 11 may notice that the password icon only appears if multiple sign-in options, such as PIN, security key, password, or fingerprint, are available. If only a password is used, the icon may not be visible, as Windows will default to displaying the password field.
According to updated support documents from Microsoft, even users with multiple sign-in options enabled may not see the password icon on the lock screen if they have installed the August 2025 KB5064081 non-security preview update or subsequent updates on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems.
However, Microsoft has clarified that hovering over the area where the icon should appear will reveal the button, allowing users to sign in with their password.
“If you hover over the space where the icon should appear, you’ll see that the password button is still available,” Microsoft explained. “Select this placeholder to open the password text box and enter your password. After entering your password, you can sign in normally.”
Microsoft is actively working to resolve the issue but has not provided a specific timeline for a fix. In a separate incident in late September, an optional update caused playback interruptions and freezing when attempting to play DRM-protected video in various applications.
Other issues caused by the August 2025 Windows updates have also been addressed, including app installation problems for non-admin Windows users and lag issues affecting NDI streaming software on Windows 10 and 11 devices.
In August, Microsoft had to address a known issue that caused security updates delivered via Windows Server Update Services to fail with errors and released emergency updates to fix broken Windows reset and recovery on Windows 10 and 10 Enterprise devices.
