Super Mario Bros: Wa-hoo Returns
The Upcoming Super Mario Movie Sequel Might Be Called Super Mario World
An accidental reveal in a press release by NBCUniversal suggests that the sequel to the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie could be named Super Mario World, distinct from the popular 90s SNES game of the same name.
In March of last year, news of the sequel was first announced, with Nintendo, Universal, and other collaborators capitalizing on the success of the original film. The success of other game adaptations like the Minecraft Movie has further solidified the decision to continue with the Mario franchise.
Recently, NBCUniversal mistakenly included Super Mario World in a list of upcoming films set to be released on its Peacock streaming service, alongside familiar titles like Shrek, Minions, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The reference to Mario was quickly removed, hinting that it may have been an error to include it in the announcement.
Speculation arises as to whether Super Mario World is indeed the final title for the sequel, especially considering the potential connection to the post-credits scene of the first movie and the iconic SNES game featuring Yoshi.
In the post-credits scene, a polka-dotted egg is shown hatching, hinting at the introduction of Yoshi. Super Mario World on the SNES marked Yoshi’s first appearance in the series, making it a significant title choice if related to the events of the first movie.
Furthermore, the upcoming Mario Kart game for the Switch 2, titled Mario Kart World, might indicate a trend towards naming conventions within the Mario universe. Whether intentional or coincidental, the synergy between titles is intriguing.
With the potential success of the sequel, will moviegoers demand lower prices at theaters, akin to the uproar caused by the Minecraft Movie? Only time will tell.
