Supply Dwindles: Japan’s Top Beer Brand Struggles After Cyberattack

Potential Asahi Beer Shortage Looms in Japan Following Cyberattack
Japan is currently grappling with the possibility of a scarcity of Asahi beer after a cyberattack on the beverage manufacturer led to the shutdown of its systems. Asahi Group made an announcement on Monday revealing that the company had to halt its order, shipment, and call center operations due to the system outage, which was confined to Japan.
In response to the situation, the company has resorted to manual processing of orders, as stated in a recent update. However, automated orders and large-scale shipments continue to remain suspended. Asahi disclosed that it was the target of a ransomware attack but refrained from sharing detailed information to prevent further harm. The company is currently unable to provide a definite timeline for the recovery of its systems.
In an official notice regarding the system failure, Asahi emphasized, “We took immediate measures to contain and address the incident.” Subsequent investigations have uncovered evidence suggesting a potential unauthorized data breach. The company is conducting a thorough inquiry to ascertain the nature and extent of any information that may have been illicitly accessed.
According to the Financial Times, leading Japanese retailers have expressed concerns that stocks of Asahi Super Dry, the nation’s most favored beer, could be depleted by the upcoming weekend if supply chains are not promptly restored.
