Team Fortress 2 Classified has officially launched on Steam, receiving approval from Valve after a brief name change from Team Fortress 2 Classic. Installing this mod is now a simple one-click process for those who already have the original TF2 game. This mod showcases exceptional craftsmanship, drawing inspiration from the game’s history while introducing new modes and weapons that were previously left unused by Valve.

Unlike some mods that attempt to revert to TF2’s earliest versions, Team Fortress 2 Classified strikes a balance by not delving too far back into the past. While it simplifies certain aspects of the game and eliminates comedic cosmetic items, it retains Valve’s key balance adjustments, such as the Pyro’s airblast ability, movable Engineer buildings, and fewer overpowered pipe bombs for the Demoman. This ensures that the mod feels fresh and relevant, rather than clinging to outdated mechanics.

The mod introduces its own unique features, including VIP mode, where one team must protect a vulnerable businessman while the opposing team tries to eliminate him. This mode was originally discarded by Valve due to the imbalance it created for the VIP player. However, in TF2 Classified, the VIP serves as a supportive role, enhancing nearby teammates’ defenses and occasionally granting mini-crit bonuses to bodyguards. This mode adds a new dynamic to gameplay, reminiscent of Payload mode but with a more interactive twist.

While some new weapons in the mod may not appeal to all players, such as the Scout’s nailgun or the Soldier’s arc-firing rocket launcher, the core gameplay remains intact with all the original TF2 weapons available. This serves as a reminder of the timeless appeal of TF2’s class loadouts, showcasing the balance and versatility that have kept the game engaging for years.

Team Fortress 2 Classified demonstrates the importance of knowing what elements to preserve when creating a mod, highlighting the significance of both retaining and enhancing the original game’s features. Despite some minor drawbacks, the mod offers a fresh take on TF2 gameplay that is worth exploring further. And while it may have removed custom cosmetics, including the beloved Horace hat, players can still enjoy the mod’s unique gameplay experience.
