Tech Industry Upheaval: Amazon Layoffs Impact over 2,200 Jobs in Washington State
Amazon Announces Layoffs Impacting Thousands of Employees in Washington
Amidst its latest corporate workforce reduction, Amazon is set to lay off 2,198 employees in Washington, as revealed in a filing by the state Employment Security Department.
The layoff list indicates a significant impact on software development roles, with engineering management, program management, and technical product positions also affected.
Over half of the job cuts are within Amazon’s core product and engineering departments. The remaining layoffs span various functions including business intelligence, sales, marketing, infrastructure, QA, HR, design, and other support roles, affecting senior and principal-level employees as well.
Seattle bears the brunt of the layoffs, with over 1,400 employees affected, while more than 600 are in nearby Bellevue, where Amazon has been expanding its presence.
These job reductions are part of a larger company-wide layoff that impacts 16,000 corporate employees globally. Coupled with a previous layoff of 14,000 workers in October, this marks Amazon’s most extensive workforce reduction in its history.
Notably, the company had laid off 2,303 employees in Washington state during the October cuts, bringing the total number of corporate layoffs in the state to over 4,500 within a year.
Software engineers were also heavily impacted during the October layoffs, with a focus on corporate support, commercial functions, and the gaming division. However, the recent round of layoffs targets the core technology organization.
Amazon’s continuous efforts to streamline operations have led to several smaller workforce reductions over the years. The company aims to reduce layers, increase ownership, and eliminate bureaucracy, as highlighted in a memo from Amazon’s senior vice president.
The layoffs are scheduled to begin on April 28 and continue through late June. Employees who secure internal transfers before their separation dates will not be laid off.
Impact on Seattle’s Tech Economy

Amazon, a major employer in the Seattle region with approximately 50,000 corporate workers, has also laid off 27,000 employees globally in the past year.
The recent wave of layoffs adds to concerns about Seattle’s tech-centric economy as other companies, including T-Mobile, Expedia, Meta, and Microsoft, have also announced significant job cuts.
- T-Mobile is laying off nearly 400 workers.
- Expedia and Meta recently laid off hundreds of employees.
- Microsoft cut over 3,200 jobs in Washington state last year as part of broader global workforce reductions.
Amid pandemic-induced corporate restructuring and economic uncertainties, many companies are downsizing to address inefficiencies and adapt to changing business landscapes, including the integration of AI technologies.
Seattle experienced a decline of 12,900 jobs across all sectors in the previous year, marking the first annual decrease since 2009, as reported by The Puget Sound Regional Council.
Amazon’s return-to-office policy for corporate employees, initiated last year, has faced mixed reactions but has been beneficial for small businesses around its office locations.
Jon Scholes, president of the Downtown Seattle Association, highlighted the community ripple effects of such large-scale workforce changes.
The broader layoffs may also impact Seattle’s commercial real estate market, which is already grappling with high vacancy rates.
Separately, Amazon is closing all Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores nationwide, resulting in approximately 400 job cuts in Washington state, unrelated to the corporate layoffs.
