Tech Leader Urges Collaboration in Push Against Tax Hikes
Microsoft President Brad Smith’s Concerns About Washington State’s Tax Policies
Microsoft President Brad Smith reiterated his criticism of state and local policymakers in Washington, cautioning against a tax-heavy agenda that could potentially weaken the region’s economic foundation.
During his address at the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber’s annual meeting, Smith highlighted Washington’s tax approach and expressed concern over the diminishing focus on economic development in the political landscape.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining healthy businesses for a thriving community, urging business leaders and nonprofits in the state to resist excessive tax hikes.
Smith stressed the need for collective action, stating that the business community must take charge of advocating for its interests and educating the public on the requirements for prosperity.
Microsoft pledged financial support for educational campaigns aimed at promoting a business-friendly environment in the state.

While Washington lacks an income tax, it implemented new business taxes this year, including expanded retail sales tax coverage, increased computing surcharges for tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon, and a higher capital gains tax.
Smith raised concerns about the impact of estate tax laws on family businesses, warning that they may relocate if tax regulations remain unfavorable.
He emphasized Microsoft’s philanthropic initiatives as evidence of businesses’ broader contributions to local communities beyond tax payments.
Despite Washington’s high ranking for technology and innovation, Smith underscored the need to sustain economic development and a healthy business climate for long-term success.
He urged collaboration among stakeholders to ensure a robust economy that can support various community aspirations.
Smith highlighted the critical juncture at which Washington finds itself, emphasizing the need to prioritize economic sustainability for overall prosperity.
