Recent reports have revealed that Amazon is making significant layoffs affecting a large number of corporate employees, predominantly software development engineers in Seattle and Bellevue. The total number of employees impacted globally is around 14,000.

According to a filing by the Washington Employment Security Department, over 600 software development engineering roles are being eliminated in Washington, making up more than a quarter of the total layoffs.

This move by Amazon aligns with similar actions taken by other tech companies like Microsoft, as they adapt to the evolving landscape of AI-driven coding tools. Amazon itself introduced an AI coding tool called Kiro and has been exploring the use of AI code assistant Cursor.

The shift towards AI technology has led to a transformative period for the industry, with companies like Amazon embracing AI to innovate at a faster pace than ever before.

Amazon’s engineering layoffs are part of a broader trend in the tech industry as it grapples with the impact of AI on traditional tech roles and white-collar jobs. Reports indicate that AI adoption is contributing to a wave of layoffs across various sectors.

Manager-level positions were also heavily affected by Amazon’s layoffs, reflecting the company’s effort to streamline operations and reduce bureaucracy. The cutbacks also impacted recruiting, HR, marketing, advertising, and legal departments.

The largest impact site for Amazon’s layoffs is at the SEA40 office building in Seattle, with 361 employees affected. Additionally, over 100 remote employees based in Washington are also facing job cuts.
