2027 Skoda Epiq review: Quick drive

Skoda is gearing up to introduce its third electric vehicle (EV) to the market, this time in the form of a compact SUV. With a pricing strategy aimed at making it more accessible than its predecessors, the Skoda Epiq is set to shake up the competitive small SUV/crossover segment.

The Epiq marks the Czech automaker’s entry into the entry-level EV market, part of the Volkswagen Group’s broader strategy to compete with Chinese and Korean rivals. The Epiq is scheduled to debut in Europe in the latter half of 2026, although an Australian release date has yet to be confirmed.

Initial impressions of the Epiq were positive, with camouflaged prototypes hinting at the final production version. The Epiq is expected to be priced similarly to the Skoda Kamiq, offering two battery options and showcasing Skoda’s ‘Modern Solid’ design language.

In terms of features, the Epiq will offer the usual Skoda practicality, including a spacious boot and signature ‘simply clever’ details. However, the Epiq will also introduce the latest driver-assistance technology and enhanced safety features to ensure a modern driving experience.

While the Epiq promises to be affordable, it doesn’t compromise on quality. The interior is functional yet modern, with physical buttons for essential functions and a digital instrument cluster for key information. The central infotainment touchscreen is standard across all variants and boasts a haptic touch bar for volume adjustment.

The Epiq’s interior offers ample storage space, with practical features like cupholders and door bins. The rear passenger space is decent, although the battery placement affects seating position and headroom slightly. The boot space is generous, with a practical design for everyday use.

Under the bonnet, the Skoda Epiq will offer three powertrains, including two battery options and three power outputs. The Epiq 55, which we had the opportunity to test, delivers a balanced performance with agile handling and comfortable ride quality.

Various driving modes are available, with the default setting providing optimal performance. Energy recuperation can be adjusted via the touchscreen, although there is room for improvement in this area. The Epiq drives like a conventional vehicle, offering a familiar driving experience with adequate feedback and responsiveness.

In terms of safety, the Epiq is equipped with advanced driver assistance systems, including Adaptive Lane Assist and Cross Assist 2.0. The vehicle’s safety features are expected to score well in crash tests, offering peace of mind for drivers and passengers.

When it comes to running costs, the Epiq is expected to come with Skoda’s seven-year unlimited-kilometer new-vehicle warranty. Servicing and warranty details are yet to be announced but are likely to be competitive within the segment.

Overall, the Skoda Epiq presents a compelling package for those looking to enter the EV market. With its combination of affordability, practicality, and modern features, the Epiq is poised to make a mark in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle landscape.
