App debacle explains why Apple won’t do major iOS redesigns anymore

Recall the era when each new iOS release brought about significant redesigns? iOS 7, you come to mind. Despite ongoing speculation hinting at another major iOS overhaul, it’s safe to say those days are behind us. A recent app fiasco serves as a stark reminder.

Sonos Redesign Debacle as a Lesson

Sonos has been in hot water recently.

Following a series of attempts to rectify their 2024 blunder—a major app redesign—the company ultimately had to replace its CEO.

The launch of the new Sonos app in April triggered a deluge of customer complaints and negative publicity that plagued the company throughout the year.

This serves as a stark example of why Apple has moved away from radical iOS overhauls.

Had the new Sonos app been introduced during the early stages of the company, it likely would have fared better.

Even with similar issues, the smaller, more tech-savvy user base back then would have adapted or seen swift fixes, preventing a full-blown crisis.

A parallel can be drawn with iOS.

iPhone’s Triumph Brings Risks with Change

During the iPhone’s initial rise, Apple could afford major redesigns as its user base was smaller and more tech-oriented.

Today, society heavily relies on the iPhone. With hundreds of millions of users, varying in tech proficiency, any sweeping changes to iOS could lead to severe backlash.

Even if a redesign garnered positive reviews, Apple’s vast user base ensures there would be significant dissent.

Apple understands that the solution isn’t stagnation but rather making significant changes on an app-by-app basis.

iOS 18.2 Photos

For instance, alterations in iOS 18’s Photos app sparked controversy, prompting fixes in subsequent updates. However, as it was limited to one app, the impact was contained.

An entire iOS revamp would pose a significant risk for Apple.

While the idea of a major iOS overhaul akin to iOS 7 may sound exciting to some (including myself), many iPhone users who prefer stability might see it as a nightmare.

The Sonos saga serves as a crucial lesson for Apple and other tech giants with established user bases.

It implies that we may need to embrace smaller, iterative iOS design updates.
