The BMW M235L: Setting New Length Standards in the Luxury Car Market
China has a unique premium automotive market that sets it apart from the rest of the world. BMW has recognized this distinct demand and has tailored its offerings to cater specifically to Chinese buyers. One such model is the BMW M235L Gran Coupe, the latest addition to BMW’s extended family of vehicles for the Chinese market. Recently, BMW photographers had the opportunity to capture the striking Thunder Night Purple metallic finish of this model.
Distinctive Design and Features
The “L” designation of the BMW M235L signifies its China-exclusive status. This model, known internally as the F78, features a 110mm (4.3 inches) longer wheelbase compared to the global 2 Series Gran Coupe, totaling 2,780mm (109.4 inches). This extended wheelbase gives the M235L a total length of 4,663mm (183.5 inches), making it longer than the iconic E28 5 Series from the 1980s. Despite the elongated rear doors to accommodate the increased wheelbase, the design maintains an elegant and proportionate look, a challenging task when stretching a compact sedan.
Thunder Night Purple: A Stunning Finish
The BMW M235L in Thunder Night Metallic showcases a color-shifting paint that transitions from a deep purple to a dark shade, creating a visually dynamic effect. The design includes M Performance styling elements such as quad exhaust tips, M kidney grille, M mirrors, and a subtle rear spoiler.
Exclusive Features for the Chinese Market
BMW has customized several features of the M235L specifically for Chinese buyers. The extended wheelbase provides extra rear legroom, catering to the preference for chauffeur-driven experiences. The rear seat offers enhanced cushioning and improved seating position, along with a panoramic sunroof, a popular luxury feature in the Chinese market.
Performance and Powertrain
Under the hood, the BMW M235L is equipped with a B48 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 296 horsepower, slightly detuned from the U.S. version to comply with Chinese regulations. Paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the M235L accelerates from 0-100 km/h in five seconds. This model is the second M Performance variant manufactured in China, reflecting the country’s growing production capabilities and market significance.
In addition to the M235L, BMW offers the 225L with a 2.0-liter engine producing 224 horsepower and the base 220L with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine generating 172 horsepower. All variants feature the extended wheelbase and seven-speed DCT transmission.
Pricing and Market Position
The BMW M235L is priced at 363,900 RMB (approximately $50,000), aligning closely with the standard-wheelbase M235 Gran Coupe in the U.S. market. The more affordable 225L starts at 259,900 RMB (around $35,500), providing a compelling option in the premium compact sedan segment.
