Google’s new deadline for Epic consequences is October 29th

US District Court Judge James Donato Grants Extension for Permanent Injunction

In a recent development, US District Court Judge James Donato has agreed to postpone the enforcement of a permanent injunction until October 29th. The decision was made following a joint request from the parties involved in the case. Here is the text of the official order:

According to the order, the upcoming deadline of October 22, 2025, on which certain provisions of the injunction were set to take effect, has been vacated and extended to October 29th, 2025. The order was signed by Judge James Donato on 10/20/2025.

The reason behind Google’s request for the extension and Epic’s agreement to it remains unclear. Previously, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney had anticipated the October 22nd deadline as a significant day for developers, allowing them to guide US Google Play users towards out-of-app payments without additional fees or restrictions, similar to Apple App Store users in the US. However, public documents filed by both parties do not mention the rationale behind the delay.

As of now, the revised deadline is set for October 29th. Google has assured compliance with its legal obligations while pursuing its appeal, indicating that Google Play Billing requirements for developers distributing apps via Google Play are expected to change on that day.

However, the situation may alter if the Supreme Court grants a stay before the designated date. Google has announced its intent to file a Supreme Court appeal by October 27th.
