The E30 M4: A Fusion of BMW M3 Heritage and M4 Performance

The BMW M4 was not introduced until around 2013 when BMW made the decision to separate the two- and four-door models of the 3 Series. The sedans retained the 3 badge, while the coupes and convertibles became the 4 Series. This split also led to the creation of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a four-door version of a two-door version of a four-door sedan, adding to the confusion. The changes extended to the M Series lineup, with convertibles and coupes becoming the M4 and sedans keeping the M3 title.
The E30 M4, as BMW referred to it, is essentially a highly modified E30 M3. The exterior modifications are evident, but the real transformation occurs under the hood. The original S14 four-cylinder engine has been replaced with the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six from the first generation M4. Despite lacking the carbon strut brace typically found in S55-powered cars, the engine’s fitment is impressive. The E30 M4 also features a custom push-rod suspension setup, ensuring exceptional handling.
Builder JP Performance took the customization of the E30 M4 further by incorporating mostly M4-sourced running gear into the car. Components such as the factory gauge cluster, steering wheel, dual-clutch transmission, and shifter from the M4 were integrated, alongside some remaining factory E30 M3 elements like the door cards and headlight switch. The car’s bodywork largely resembles that of the iconic 80s model, with some interior modifications like custom Recaro seats and cooling components by CSF.
BMW has previously showcased the E30 M4, but this particular S55-swapped version stands out for its extreme suspension setup, making it one of the most comprehensive E30 M4 projects to date. The project is well-documented, offering a detailed look into the unique transformation of the E30 M3 into the E30 M4. It remains one of the most notable examples of this type of build.
