Sony’s Quirky Holiday Ad Campaign: A Closer Look

Every year, Sony delivers a unique and unconventional approach to selling PlayStations during the holiday season. This year, they have opted for three distinct vignettes, each selling the idea that “anything can happen on PlayStation” without actually showcasing any games or consoles.

In the first advert, viewers are treated to a scene reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto, with a driver waking up in a truck in an unexpected location. While YouTube may give away the exact location, the element of surprise is still preserved.

The second advert takes place on a fishing trawler that has caught a monstrous creature, but there is a twist in the tale that remains unspoiled on YouTube.

The third and final advert takes a more mysterious turn as two survivors from a wrecked spaceship encounter a truck driven by an older woman, leaving viewers intrigued but puzzled.

While Sony’s holiday adverts usually hide Easter eggs for eagle-eyed viewers to spot, this year’s offerings seem to have fewer hidden references. The presence of the PS5 logo on the truck and boat in the first two adverts, as well as other subtle hints, may be the only clues to uncover.

Compared to last year’s lackluster ad, which featured people bouncing around aimlessly, this year’s campaign seems to have more impact and intrigue.

It’s hard not to reminisce about the days when Sony would mash up characters from multiple games in a single advert. Looking back, it’s been fourteen years since they pulled off such a feat, making many of us feel a twinge of nostalgia and a sense of time passing.
