The Elder Scrolls: A New Dawn – A Skyrim Co-Lead’s Vision for The Elder Scrolls 6
The Elder Scrolls 6: What Could Have Been – Insights from a Former Bethesda Developer
Former Bethesda developer and Skyrim co-lead designer Kurt Kuhlmann recently shared insights into his original vision for The Elder Scrolls 6. Kuhlmann, who left Bethesda in 2023, revealed that he was initially promised the lead role in developing the highly anticipated sequel. However, due to changes in the studio’s plans, he ultimately did not take on this position.
In a conversation with PC Gamer, Kuhlmann disclosed that Todd Howard, Bethesda’s renowned director, had verbally assured him of leading the project following the success of Skyrim. With Fallout 4 in the pipeline, The Elder Scrolls 6 was supposed to be the next major endeavor for the studio. Despite these initial plans, Bethesda shifted focus to projects like Fallout 76 and Starfield, leading to Kuhlmann’s departure.
Reflecting on the situation, Kuhlmann mentioned that while he was disappointed by the change in plans, he now believes that being the lead on The Elder Scrolls 6 might not have been the best fit for him. He highlighted differences in vision between himself and Howard, as well as challenges related to the studio’s growth and development processes.
If Kuhlmann had been in charge of shaping the story for The Elder Scrolls 6, he envisioned a narrative inspired by The Empire Strikes Back. The plot would have focused on the Thalmor-led Aldmeri Dominion’s quest for dominance over Tamriel, with players assuming a more subtle role in the conflict. The ending would have centered on preserving hope for future victories rather than achieving immediate triumphs.
However, Kuhlmann expressed uncertainty about whether this approach would have resonated with players, considering the potential backlash against cliffhanger endings in modern gaming. Despite these uncertainties, he believed that his proposed storyline aligned with the thematic direction set by Skyrim, hinting at a darker and more nuanced narrative for the series.
While Kuhlmann’s vision for The Elder Scrolls 6 remains a hypothetical scenario, his insights offer a glimpse into the creative process behind one of gaming’s most beloved franchises. Whether Bethesda will incorporate similar themes in their future projects remains to be seen, but fans can only speculate on the possibilities that lie ahead.
As the gaming community eagerly anticipates the next chapter in The Elder Scrolls saga, Kuhlmann’s contributions and the legacy of Skyrim continue to shape the series’ evolution. While the fate of Tamriel hangs in the balance, one thing is certain – the world of The Elder Scrolls will always be ripe for new adventures and unexpected twists.
