The Future of Fallout 76: Why Bethesda is Focusing on Internal Expansion
Exploring the Future of Fallout 76: An Interview with Bethesda’s Jon Rush
Today, Mark is taking a well-deserved holiday, leaving us without our usual banter of persuading him to write about Fallout 76 while we sip on Glenfiddich in our wingback chairs. However, Bethesda Game Studios’ creative director Jon Rush recently shared some exciting insights in a PCGN interview about the future of the multiplayer RPG.
Rush expressed his ambition for Fallout 76 to become “thicker” by 2026, hinting at a more immersive gaming experience. Following the extensive map expansions of Skyline Valley and Burning Springs, Rush aims to enhance the depth and breadth of the existing in-game spaces.
Looking ahead, Rush envisions shifting focus from expanding the outskirts to enriching the core gameplay experience. He mentioned plans for introducing new systems and enhancing engagement with the existing content throughout the upcoming year.
Rush emphasized the necessity of evolving update strategies due to technical constraints that limit endless map expansions. Instead of merely increasing the playable area, the focus is on enriching the player experience within familiar settings. He cited the success of last year’s C.A.M.P. construction updates as a testament to the benefits of enhancing gameplay depth.
By loosening building restrictions, players were empowered to engage with the game world in new ways, leading to more ambitious and creative settlement designs. These changes significantly impacted player interactions and activities within the game.
While the expansion of Fallout 76’s world may be gradual, players can anticipate a wealth of new activities and experiences within existing locations. Whether exploring the post-apocalyptic landscapes of Burning Springs or embarking on historical tours with an Ohio historian, the game promises continued excitement and engagement.
