The Grille: A Closer Look at the Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic Show Car

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Vision Iconic Concept Car
The recent debut of the Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic concept car marks a significant milestone for the German luxury automaker, signaling the beginning of what they call “a new era of iconic design.” This comes after a period of what Mercedes-Benz deemed as uninspiring vehicle releases.
Combining a bold Art-deco design aesthetic with cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) technology, solar-power cells, and artificial intelligence (AI) that emulates human thought patterns, the Vision Iconic show car is a sight to behold.
The striking chromed radiator grille of the gothic-inspired show car draws inspiration from classic Mercedes-Benz models such as the W108 (1965-1972), W111 (1959-1971), and W100 Pullman 600 (1963-1981). This design language was first introduced on the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC mid-size SUV at the recent Munich motor show.
According to Mercedes-Benz’s design chief, Gorden Wagener, the Vision Iconic is not just a vehicle but a work of art in motion, a tribute to timeless elegance, and a vision of the future. The seamless blend of traditional craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology, and a unique design language makes it a symbol of value, prestige, and grace.
Revolutionizing Vehicle Design
The Vision Iconic concept car features a ‘hyper-analogue’ interior design approach, with an Art-Deco inspired ‘floating Zeppelin’ center glass screen that harmoniously integrates analogue and digital elements. Brass door handles, plush blue velvet seat upholstery, and handcrafted ‘straw marquetry’ details from the 1920s add a touch of retro luxury to the futuristic vehicle.
Despite its vintage theme, the concept incorporates modern technologies such as solar modules for enhanced driving range, Level 2 autonomous driving capability, and ‘Neuromorphic’ computing that mimics human brain function to improve autonomous decision-making.
The Vision Iconic also introduces ‘steer by wire’ technology, eliminating the physical connection between the steering wheel and wheels to reduce grip force and enhance cockpit layout flexibility.
Mercedes-Benz’s Vision for the Future
Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation extends beyond the vehicle itself. In addition to the concept car, the company launched a capsule fashion collection and a book exploring the philosophy behind their latest design language.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLC, adorned with the ‘Iconic’ design theme, represents the brand’s vision for the future of automotive design. This unveiling coincided with the debut of the BMW iX3, signaling a new era of competition between the two German automakers.
