The Evolution of Game Trailers: From CG Renders to Reality
Remember the controversy surrounding CG render trailers during the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One era? It was a common practice for companies to showcase visually stunning trailers that bore little resemblance to actual gameplay. Fast forward to today, and every game announcement comes with a CG trailer. This trend raises questions about the authenticity of these previews, especially when considering titles like Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, which may not even have a single line of code written yet.
Recently, a new studio unveiled plans to develop Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. However, the studio was established just this year, suggesting a lengthy development timeline ahead. With AAA games typically taking four to five years to complete, fans might have to wait until the next decade to experience this game – assuming it ever sees the light of day. History shows that Star Wars titles announced at events often face challenges and may end up stuck in development limbo.
For instance, Star Wars: 1313 was announced at E3 2012 only to be cancelled a year later. Similarly, the announcement of Star Wars: Eclipse by Quantic Dream in 2021 has yielded no further updates since. Even the highly anticipated Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake, announced in 2021, reportedly faced setbacks, leading to speculation that the entire project was scrapped before being taken over by Mad Head Games.
Adding to the list of upcoming Star Wars titles is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, which made its debut at The Game Awards 2025. Speaking about the game, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games, Douglas Reilly, emphasized the vast storytelling potential of exploring the galaxy’s past while introducing new characters and narratives. This fresh approach aims to expand the Star Wars universe while maintaining its core essence.
With the promise of infinite storytelling possibilities in a familiar yet uncharted territory, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic has piqued the interest of fans eager to delve into new adventures within the beloved franchise.
