The Long Dark comes to an end today, except it's not "the end" only "an end"

The Long Dark Wintermute Episode Five: The Light at the End of All Things

After almost a decade since its initial release, The Long Dark concludes its Wintermute story mode today with the release of the fifth and final episode, titled “The Light at the End of All Things.” This marks the end of a long and challenging journey for both the players and the developers. Originally scheduled for the end of 2025, the free episode update has finally arrived, bringing closure to the narrative.

In a recent statement on LinkedIn, Hinterland CEO Raphael van Lierop mentioned that the release of the final episode signifies the end of a significant chapter. While it may seem like the end of an era for the studio, van Lierop hinted at future plans that include ongoing development for The Long Dark, the upcoming sequel Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2, and other unannounced projects.

”This isn’t the end of meaningful development for The Long Dark,” van Lierop clarified. While Episode Five marks a major milestone in delivering what was promised to fans years ago, the journey continues with more updates and announcements planned for the future.

Episode Five aims to bring a definitive conclusion to the long-running story mode, offering players a more linear experience that can be completed in 12-15 hours. The focus is on providing a satisfying ending to the narrative, ensuring that players feel a sense of closure after investing time in the game.

Van Lierop also urged players to consider the evolution of the game over the years, acknowledging that earlier episodes may show signs of age compared to the latest content. Players are encouraged to approach the game with understanding and appreciation for the development team’s progress and improvements.
