The Long Dark Wintermute DLC Episode Five Release Date Confirmed for March 31st, 2026

The highly anticipated final episode of The Long Dark’s Wintermute DLC is set to be released on March 31st, 2026, after a slight delay. Originally scheduled for the end of this year, developer Hinterland Studio cited the need for additional time to complete cinematic work, the soundtrack, and mission polish as reasons for the delay. Despite the wait, fans can now mark their calendars for the official release date.

In a recent Steam post, Hinterland Studio stated, “While the majority of the episode content is now finished, there was just no way for us to wrap up the remaining cinematic work, the soundtrack, or complete the last bit of mission polish in time for the end of this year as we had originally planned. So we’re taking a couple of extra months to finish that work, then to optimize, fix the bugs, and get it ready for console certification and launch for the end of March.”

Along with the release date announcement, a new trailer for episode five, titled The Light at the End of All Things, was unveiled. The emotional trailer showcases various scenes, including a town next to a frozen lake, a boat under the aurora borealis, and a radar station. The trailer ends with the poignant line, “nothing lasts forever,” setting the tone for the final installment of The Long Dark’s Wintermute DLC.

While this may mark the end of The Long Dark, it’s not the end of the series. Hinterland Studio revealed plans for a sequel titled Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2, which will feature co-op multiplayer, urban areas, and a sanity system. For fans looking for a new adventure after the conclusion of episode five, the upcoming sequel promises to deliver a fresh experience.
