The Legendary BMW 3.0 CSL: A Racing Icon

When discussing the first BMW M car, opinions vary. Some enthusiasts point to the M1, while others argue for the 1976 530 MLE. However, if we exclude license plate considerations, we find an even older contender – the iconic 3.0 CSL.

Introduced in 1973, the 3.0 CSL was the racing variant of the E9 model, appearing just a year after the establishment of BMW Motorsport GmbH. Initially, 21 cars were produced, with only 11 seeing action on the track. The very first completed vehicle, chassis E9/R1, is now available for sale.

Offered by Dylan Miles Ltd based in the UK, this historic car, used as a test and development vehicle by the works team, is currently listed on Classic Driver with an undisclosed price tag. Assembled in the early 1970s, it served as a testing platform for racing legends such as Hans Stuck and Harald Menzel.

The origins of the famous “Batmobile” body kit can be traced back to the 3.0 CSL. While initially raced without this aerodynamic package due to regulations, BMW Motorsport later upgraded the car to the iconic Batmobile specification after receiving FIA approval.

Over the years, this inaugural M car changed hands between racing teams before finding its way to various BMW collectors. Recently restored to its original form, it has made appearances at prestigious events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Salon Privé Concours d’Elegance.

The significance of the 3.0 CSL in BMW’s M division cannot be overstated. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “most powerful letter,” BMW released an exclusive 3.0 CSL based on the M4, featuring a potent inline-six engine and a design inspired by the original Batmobile.

While the modern-day 3.0 CSL is a limited edition model with a hefty price tag, the historic chassis E9/R1 holds immense heritage and value, likely commanding a significant price in the market.
