Amazon’s AGI Head Rohit Prasad to Depart, Peter DeSantis to Lead Advanced AI Division

In a significant development, Amazon’s head of artificial general intelligence (AGI), Rohit Prasad, is set to leave the tech giant next year. This announcement comes as Amazon is at a crucial “inflection point” in the advancement of its AGI technology. CEO Andy Jassy revealed this news on Wednesday, highlighting the transition that will see Peter DeSantis, a senior vice president at Amazon Web Services, take the reins of a new division dedicated to the company’s cutting-edge AI models, chip development, and quantum computing.

Prasad, who joined Amazon in 2013, has been instrumental in shaping the evolution of Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa. His contributions include overseeing the launch of the Amazon Nova AI models and later assuming leadership of the AGI team in 2023. In a recent interview with Verge alum and Sources founder Alex Heath, Prasad emphasized the limitations of existing AI benchmarks, stating, “None of these benchmarks are real… The evals are frankly getting noisy, and they’re not showing the real power of these models.” Despite the recent launch of the Nova 2 AI model family, Amazon’s performance on certain benchmark leaderboards lags behind that of its competitors.

In recent years, Amazon has faced challenges in keeping pace with industry giants like Microsoft, Google, Meta, and OpenAI. The anticipated AI-driven overhaul of Alexa has experienced delays and has yet to deliver the expected performance.

With Prasad’s impending departure, DeSantis, a seasoned Amazon executive with three decades of experience, will lead a larger team focusing on advanced technologies. Additionally, renowned AI researcher Pieter Abbeel will spearhead Amazon’s frontier model research team. Jassy expressed optimism about the future, stating, “The path ahead is full of opportunity. With the strong foundation in place, the momentum we are witnessing, and Peter’s leadership driving a unified approach to these technologies, Amazon is well-positioned to innovate and deliver impactful solutions for our customers.”
