Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Cancelled – A Developer’s Perspective

Ubisoft recently made the decision to cancel several games, with the most notable being the long-awaited Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. This move was part of a significant restructuring at the company, which has put up to 200 jobs at their Paris headquarters at risk. The situation has escalated to the point of an international strike being called for, leading to the firing of a designer from the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The fallout from these actions has raised concerns within the gaming industry.

Jordan Mechner, the creator of Prince of Persia and lead designer of the original Sands of Time, expressed his sympathy towards the developers affected by the cancellation of the remake. In a blog post on his personal website, Mechner stated, “The remake’s cancellation as part of Ubisoft’s restructuring was disappointing news to all fans who’d been eagerly awaiting it, myself included.”

Mechner also acknowledged the impact that project cancellations can have on developers, particularly on younger professionals who are still building their portfolios. He highlighted the emotional toll of seeing years of hard work go to waste, emphasizing the personal sacrifices that developers make for their projects.

Mechner’s poignant reflection on the effects of project cancellations resonates with many in the industry. The long hours spent in the studio, away from loved ones, only to have a project shelved can be a devastating blow to morale. The cycle of prolonged development times for games is a challenge that many developers face.
