When the iPhone’s Check In feature was first introduced as part of iOS 17 in 2023, we provided you with an overview. If you haven’t been utilizing it, perhaps this review will encourage you to reconsider.

Many iPhone users are understandably cautious about sharing their location with others, especially if they are not close family. However, the beauty of Check In lies in the fact that it allows you to share this information only when it is absolutely necessary.

With Check In, you can provide reassurance to your friends and family about your safety without constantly allowing them to track your movements. You also have the option to control the amount of information shared with a specific contact. This security feature on the iPhone may be underrated, but it is extremely valuable. Here is where you can locate it and how it operates.

Check In is managed through the Messages app. Once activated, it automatically notifies your chosen friend or family member when you (and your iPhone) have reached a specified location, such as your home.

The individual you are “checking in” with does not need to be at the same location as you. Check In is designed to inform a loved one about your destination and confirm that you have arrived at the expected time, regardless of their whereabouts. If you fail to reach your destination within a reasonable timeframe, your contact will receive a notification. This notification may include additional details that could be crucial if you find yourself stranded or lost. However, you have the ability to control the extent of information shared.

Here is how you can send a Check In:

  1. Open your Messages app and select a conversation with the individual you wish to share a Check In with.
  2. Tap the + icon at the bottom left of your screen.
  3. Scroll down until you locate Check In and tap on it.
  4. Tap Edit in the Check In message body.
  5. Tap Destination at the top left of the Check In screen and enter your destination.
  6. Once you have confirmed the accuracy of the destination, you can indicate whether you are driving, using public transit, or walking. This helps estimate your anticipated arrival time. You can either accept this estimation or add more time if needed by tapping Add Extra Time.
  7. Upon completion, tap the blue check mark icon at the top right of the screen.
  8. The Check In message body will be automatically updated with your destination’s address and your anticipated arrival time.
  9. Send your Check In to the recipient(s).

Apple has also incorporated a useful new Workout Check In feature in watchOS 11, which enables you to automatically Check In while running and notify your contacts upon completion. To utilize this feature, initiate your workout, swipe right, tap Check In from the controls, and select the contact to whom you wish to send Check In information.

What Occurs if You Miss a Check In?

If you reach your destination, the individual you shared the Check In with will be automatically notified — there is no action required on your part. However, if your iPhone fails to reach your designated destination by the expected time, you will receive a prompt asking whether you want to update your contact(s) to inform them of your status or request assistance.

If you do not respond to this prompt within 15 minutes (or if you initiate an Emergency SOS call), your friend or family member will receive a notification containing your most recent location, as well as the battery and network signal strength of your iPhone or Apple Watch.

You have the option to configure your iPhone to share additional data, such as the route you traveled, by navigating to Settings > Apps > Messages > Check In Data and selecting Full.

  • Limited: Includes the most recent location and details about battery and network signal for iPhone and Apple Watch.
  • Full: Encompasses all limited data plus the route traveled and the location of the last iPhone unlock and Apple Watch removal.

It is important to note that the Check In will trigger an alert to the recipient if you lose cellular service or if your iPhone or Apple Watch powers off, ensuring that your latest location data is transmitted in the event your devices do not reconnect online.

Although other Apple safety features like Emergency SOS and Crash Detection receive significant media attention, the iPhone’s Check In feature is an additional demonstration of how Apple leverages its devices to enhance personal safety through proactive communication. Check In is a straightforward yet potent tool. Whether you are taking late-night strolls, traveling solo, hiking, or your children are walking home from school, consider giving Check In a try. It may become a part of your daily routine.
