Ticketmaster’s Ticket Trouble: AWS Outage Impacts Mariners vs. Blue Jays Playoff Game in Toronto
The Impact of the Recent AWS Outage on the Sports World
The recent massive AWS outage had significant repercussions in the sports industry on Monday. Ticketmaster, a key player in ticket management, faced challenges due to the outage affecting several sports teams hosting games on that day, such as the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Seahawks.
For instance, the Blue Jays, engaged in a crucial MLB playoff game against the Seattle Mariners at Rogers Centre in Toronto, had to address the outage and advised fans to refrain from managing their tickets temporarily.
Similarly, the Seahawks, hosting the Houston Texans for Monday Night Football in Seattle, also had to deal with access issues to Ticketmaster and other essential platforms.
Moreover, the Detroit Lions, hosting their own Monday Night Football game, also experienced disruptions in their ticketing processes.
Not only ticketing systems were affected by the outage, but it also impacted other areas. The Premier League announced that its VAR tech system, crucial for making offside calls in soccer matches, would be unavailable during the game between West Ham and Brentford.
The outage originated in Amazon’s Northern Virginia region, the oldest and largest cloud region for AWS services, disrupting various online services dependent on this infrastructure.
Initially attributed to a DNS resolution issue with DynamoDB, a critical database service, the outage was later linked to an internal subsystem responsible for monitoring network load balancers.
Despite the challenges, AWS managed to restore normal operations by 3 p.m. PT, alleviating concerns for major sites and services like Facebook, Snapchat, Coinbase, and Amazon itself.
However, the incident highlighted the importance of implementing redundancy measures to mitigate the impact of AWS outages in the future, emphasizing the need for a robust backup plan for online services.
