Toyota’s Next Flagship Supercar to Feature New V8 Engine

Exciting news has emerged from Toyota’s camp regarding their upcoming flagship supercar – the GR GT / Lexus LFR. Takashi Uehara, Toyota’s powertrain president, has officially confirmed the development of a new V8 engine for the Toyota GR GT.

During a media interaction at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, Uehara revealed that a twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine is in the works for the highly anticipated supercar. This engine is part of a new lineup of modular petrol engines, which will also include turbocharged 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter 4-cylinder units.

Interestingly, the same V8 engine will find its way into the Lexus LFR, positioned as the successor to the iconic Lexus LFA.

“We have several divisions within the engines. For instance, for the 1.5-liter engine, we offer various options, including sporty variants. Similarly, for both engine sizes, we have different configurations as needed,” Uehara explained.

He further elaborated on the rationale behind opting for a V8 powerplant, stating, “The V8 engine offers the best performance characteristics, considering factors such as power output and combustion design. When aiming for maximum power, factors like maximum RPM and combustion chamber design come into play, making the V8 engine a suitable choice.”

The insights shared by Uehara shed light on Toyota’s strategic approach to engine development, emphasizing both performance and design considerations.
