Uber and Nvidia Team Up to Launch Massive Fleet of Robotaxis

Uber and Nvidia have joined forces to introduce 100,000 robotaxis by 2027.

“In collaboration with Uber, we are establishing a framework for the widespread deployment of autonomous fleets, powered by Nvidia’s AI infrastructure,” said Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, in a statement.

Nvidia has also partnered with car manufacturers Stellantis, Lucid, and Mercedes-Benz to bridge the gap between current human-driven transportation and future autonomous fleets.

These partnerships are part of Nvidia’s efforts to position itself at the forefront of self-driving vehicle technology.

Huang emphasized the significance of robotaxis in revolutionizing transportation, making it safer, cleaner, and more efficient. He stated, “What was once a concept from science fiction is quickly becoming a reality in our daily lives.”

The integration of artificial intelligence and high-speed internet connectivity is crucial for vehicles to operate safely and intelligently on the road.

“Nvidia is leading the way in the era of AI and is now leveraging that innovation to enable Level-4 autonomy on a large scale,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber.

Level-4 autonomous vehicles are capable of independently managing driving tasks.

It remains unclear whether Uber intends to include human drivers in robotaxis as an additional safety measure in regions where it is not mandated by regulations.

No specific details were provided regarding the timeline for the rollout of robotaxis or the manufacturers involved.

“Ride-hailing platforms like Uber are ideal for the widespread deployment of robotaxis,” noted Marc Amblard, managing director of Orsay Consulting, in an interview with AFP.

“Nvidia is the natural computing technology partner, collaborating closely with automakers.”

Currently, Uber allows users in select US cities to hail robotaxis operated by Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company.

Amblard suggested that Uber might turn to Waymo or Chinese autonomous vehicle companies for certain technologies required for robotaxis.

Waymo recently announced plans to introduce its robotaxis in London next year, marking its European debut after establishing a presence in several US cities.

Chinese tech giant Baidu revealed intentions to launch robotaxis through the rideshare platform Lyft in Germany and the UK in 2026, pending regulatory approvals.

Baidu had previously reached a similar agreement with Uber in Asia and the Middle East, aiming to lead the competitive field of autonomous driving globally.

Chinese tech firms and automakers have heavily invested in self-driving technology in recent years, with intelligent driving becoming a key battleground in the domestic auto market.

Baidu is not alone among Chinese companies seeking to expand their presence internationally.
