Unboxing the iPhone Air: My First Impression

I finally get the iPhone Air

I saw a lot of weird phones at Mobile World Congress last month

At the Mobile World Congress last month, I came across a variety of strange phones: robot phones, cameras disguised as phones, and even phones for dogs. However, the most surprising one was the iPhone Air that my friend Sam Byford, a former Verge member, brought to dinner.

The Unexpected iPhone Air

When Sam revealed the iPhone Air during our dinner conversation, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “You actually use that thing?” To my surprise, he responded with a confident, “Yeah, it’s great.” He then proceeded to show me another phone he was using alongside the iPhone Air, the Xiaomi Leica Leitzphone.

Reconsidering the iPhone Air

Despite my initial skepticism, I started to reconsider my opinion on the iPhone Air. While I had previously rated it a 7 in my review, I had regarded it as a quirky device on the path to Apple’s folding phone. However, after revisiting the iPhone Air post-MWC, my perspective began to shift.

The iPhone Air might actually be good

A Surprising Revelation

Upon using the iPhone Air for a more extended period, I found myself unexpectedly hooked. Despite its drawbacks such as weaker battery life, a single rear camera, and a solitary speaker, I discovered a certain charm in its slim profile and lightweight design.

MagSafe Integration

Apple’s inclusion of the super-slim MagSafe battery pack with the iPhone Air proved to be a strategic move. This accessory not only served as a backup power source but also enhanced the overall user experience. The modular nature of MagSafe opened up new possibilities for the iPhone Air.

Exploring Modularity

By leveraging MagSafe accessories like a ring grip, wallet, or Bluetooth speaker, users could transform the iPhone Air into a more versatile and functional device. The modular capabilities of MagSafe offered a solution to some of the iPhone Air’s limitations, making it a compelling choice for tech enthusiasts.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the primary hurdles with the iPhone Air was its camera performance. While it lacked the advanced features of other smartphones, users could still make the most of its wide-angle lens and basic zoom capabilities. Additionally, the option to attach external lenses could further enhance the camera experience.

Final Thoughts

While the iPhone Air may not be practical for everyone, it certainly has its unique appeal. As I transition back to my previous device, I can’t help but appreciate the iPhone Air for its distinctive qualities. Whether it’s a mere detour on the road to a folding iPhone or a standalone innovation, the iPhone Air has left a lasting impression on me.
