The Disappearance of the “Competition” Badge from BMW M’s Lineup

BMW M enthusiasts have noticed the quiet disappearance of the iconic “Competition” badge from the brand’s lineup. For years, this badge symbolized a sharper, more focused version of already high-performing cars, serving as a way to distinguish the purist’s choice from the regular M model. However, during an interview at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel confirmed that the badge is now effectively dead.

Reasons Behind the Badge’s Disappearance

According to van Meel, the concept behind the “Competition” badge was initially straightforward. BMW observed other brands offering a two-tier system: a base version and a higher-performance variant. Following suit, M introduced the Competition models with enhanced power, tighter suspension, and subtle visual differences. However, as time passed, the majority of customers opted for the higher-tier models. Van Meel revealed that “more than 80 percent of our customers chose the Competition model,” prompting BMW to make it the standard offering. This shift was already evident in the current M2 (G87), which boasts 480 horsepower, surpassing its predecessor, the M2 Competition. As a result, every new M product now embodies the performance level that was once exclusive to the Competition trim, rendering the badge redundant.

Van Meel further emphasized, “You could say that every M model today embodies the essence of Competition.”

Simplifying the M Hierarchy

This strategic evolution aligns with BMW M’s overarching goal of streamlining its offerings and enhancing clarity. Instead of managing multiple performance tiers, the brand now focuses on three primary categories:

  • M – representing the core high-performance vehicle
  • M CS – denoting the lighter, more agile limited edition models
  • M CSL – signifying the flagship collector’s edition

This refined approach aims to simplify BMW M’s lineup as it transitions into a new era, encompassing electrified and all-electric vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform. This streamlined structure is anticipated to extend to the upcoming G84 BMW M3.

Legacy of the Badge

Although the “Competition” badge may have vanished, its essence lives on. BMW M continues to produce vehicles that epitomize power and precision, with every model now embodying the highest performance standards as the baseline. This paradigm shift eliminates the concept of a performance “upgrade,” ensuring that each M car is tailored to meet customer expectations from the outset.
