Unexpected Recall: The Surprising Explanation Behind Ferrari’s 12Cilindri Issue
Ferrari Recalls 80 12Cilindri Models Due to Dark Windows
Automakers are no strangers to recalling vehicles for safety reasons, and Ferrari is no exception. In a recent announcement, Ferrari is recalling over 80 12Cilindri models due to a specific issue with their windows tint. The tint on these models is too dark, which does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
According to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rear and side windows on the Ferrari 12Cilindri do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) No. 205. These standards require that outward-facing glass must allow at least 70 percent of light from outside to ensure proper visibility for drivers. The dark windows on these models block more light than allowed, potentially compromising driver visibility, especially at night, and increasing the risk of accidents, fires, injuries, and even fatalities.
Ferrari identified this issue during a predelivery inspection in the US, indicating a misconfiguration of technical features for the US market. Fortunately, there have been no reported warranty claims, injuries, or accidents related to this problem.
To address the issue, Ferrari will replace the dark rear and side windows with new compliant ones that meet FMVSS regulations. The automaker will also reimburse owners for the cost of replacing the windows as a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience caused by the recall.

All current owners of the affected 12Cilindri models will receive notification from Ferrari before May 15, 2026. Owners are advised to contact an authorized Ferrari dealer to schedule an appointment for the window replacement. If you own a Ferrari 12Cilindri and are concerned about whether your vehicle is affected, you can reach out to your Ferrari representative or check the NHTSA recalls website using your car’s VIN.
