Honda Cancels Three Electric Vehicle Models Due to Cooling Sentiment in the US

Amid a decline in sentiment towards electric vehicles in the US and the looming prospect of continued losses, Honda has made the decision to cancel the production of the 0 SUV, 0 Saloon, and Acura RSX EVs, all of which were slated to begin production this year.

In a recent statement, Honda cited the slowdown in EV adoption in the USA, attributing it to the relaxation of fossil fuel regulations and revisions to EV incentives. This includes the Trump administration’s reduction of penalties for not meeting fuel economy standards and the elimination of the federal tax credit for EV purchases.

Furthermore, the company also highlighted the impact of rising tariffs in the US and a decline in the competitiveness of Honda products in Asia due to increased resources allocated to EV development.

Honda emphasized that after careful consideration, it has opted to halt the development and market launch of the three EV models due to the expected long-term losses in a cooling market.

All three vehicles were set to be produced at Honda’s EV Motor Hub in Marysville, Ohio, with production schedules ranging from the first half of 2026 to the end of the year.

Reports suggested that the 0 Series models would have come in single-motor and dual-motor versions, with a battery offering up to 480km of driving range.

With the cancellation of the 0 Series and RSX, Honda plans to shift its focus to hybrid vehicles for the US and Asian markets.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the production of the 0 Alpha SUV, which is slated to begin production in India in 2027.

Overall, Honda’s revised forecasts indicate a potential loss of up to ¥650 billion for the year ending March 2026, a significant shift from the previously predicted profit of around ¥620 million.

In response to the financial challenges, board members are taking pay cuts, and senior executives are forgoing their short-term performance bonuses.

As Honda navigates these changes, it is clear that the company is adapting its strategy to align with the evolving landscape of the automotive industry.
