United Airlines TSA Wait Times in App

United Airlines stands out among its competitors for its proactive approach to adopting new Apple device features. In 2024, it was one of the first airlines to embrace Apple’s AirTag lost luggage tracking system. Going a step further, United integrated this tool into its iPhone app, allowing passengers to easily share an AirTag placed inside a lost bag with the airline’s personnel. The airline also wasted no time in supporting new iOS 26 boarding passes and offering Apple TV entertainment on its in-flight systems.

The latest update from United Airlines introduces a new TSA tracker, shining a spotlight on its recently added features, including the deep integration of Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature for AirTags.

Many iPhone users have been utilizing AirTags in their checked bags since 2021, facilitating the reunion of lost luggage with its owners in various scenarios. Previously, passengers had to track their own luggage using the Find My app and then convince airline customer service agents of the bag’s location. However, in late 2024, Apple collaborated with airlines to streamline the process of sharing AirTag locations. This feature enables users to generate a link to a specific AirTag’s location directly from the Find My app and share it with the airline’s customer service for efficient tracking.

While over three dozen airlines now have the capability to utilize AirTag links for locating lost luggage, the submission process varies widely among them. United Airlines has opted for direct integration in its app, providing a designated space within the delayed baggage report to paste the AirTag link along with detailed instructions.

Although the “Share Item Location” feature was introduced in 2024, United Airlines emphasizes how these “bag tracking enhancements” have become integral to its travel ecosystem, complementing the new security line data.

Additionally, the United Airlines app update offers a valuable feature that is particularly relevant in the current landscape – tracking TSA wait times. The app will now include estimated Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security wait times collected by the airline, a pioneering offering among major U.S. carriers. This feature, part of a new pilot program, provides travelers with real-time updates on airport security lines, enabling them to plan their travel with confidence.

Amid the ongoing partial U.S. government shutdown affecting TSA operations, the addition of security wait time tracking by United Airlines proves to be timely and essential. Delays in clearing security checkpoints can significantly impact travel plans, underscoring the importance of staying informed and prepared.

Initially, security wait times will be available for United’s U.S. hub airports in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington DC, offering estimated times for specific lanes including standard and TSA PreCheck.

Jason Birnbaum, United’s Chief Information Officer, acknowledges the dedication of TSA agents and the importance of keeping travelers informed amidst the ongoing government shutdown. The new app feature aims to provide customers with valuable insights to enhance their travel experience and better plan their trips.

In addition to security wait times and AirTag luggage tracking, the United Airlines app now offers turn-by-turn directions to guide passengers to their gates, complete with estimated walking times and information on United’s ability to accommodate travelers with tight flight connections.
