Unveiling Larian’s Generative AI: Exploring the Lost in Translation
Larian plans to provide a deeper understanding of their use of generative AI through an upcoming ask me anything session scheduled for the new year. This session will also offer the opportunity to ask general questions about Divinity. The decision to host this session came after the announcement by Geoff of the next RPG from Baldur’s Gate 3 developers, which was followed by comments from CEO Swen Vincke revealing the limited use of generative AI by the studio.
In response to the backlash regarding Larian’s use of genAI for various purposes like exploring ideas and creating placeholder text, the CEO announced the upcoming ask me anything chat in the new year. Vincke expressed that there has been misinterpretation following the announcement of Divinity and this session aims to provide clarity and address any questions about Divinity and the development process directly.
Although a specific date for the chat was not disclosed, Vincke mentioned that it will be revealed in 2026. He also shared his perspective on Larian’s focus on agency, stating that their goal is to empower their teams, enhance games, and benefit players. The CEO emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to work in their own ways to create the best RPGs possible.
“In that context, it would be irresponsible for us not to evaluate new technologies. However, our processes are always evolving, and where they are not efficient or fail to align with who we are, we will make changes.”
Despite facing criticism, Vincke and the team have been actively providing explanations and clarifications through various platforms. Larian’s publishing director Michael Douse has also been involved in addressing the concerns. While some attempts at defending the studio through retweets and memes may not have been effective, the team has remained engaged with the community.
