iOS 18.2 beta now available with Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT, iPhone 16 Visual Intelligence, and more

The latest iOS 18.2 developer beta has been released, introducing a new wave of Apple Intelligence features for developers to explore.

iOS 18.2 brings several new Apple Intelligence capabilities, including Genmoji and Image Playground for image generation, ChatGPT integration in Siri and Writing Tools, and enhanced Writing Tools with the addition of a ‘Describe your change’ text field. iPhone 16 users now have access to Visual Intelligence through the Camera Control feature. Furthermore, Apple Intelligence is expanding to more English-speaking regions, going beyond just US English …

iOS 18.1 is set to be publicly launched next week, with Apple Intelligence initially supporting US English only. With the release of iOS 18.2, additional English locales will be supported, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

If you are located outside of these regions, you can switch your device language to one of the supported languages to experience Apple Intelligence. Official support for some non-English languages is planned for the following year. However, it is important to note that Apple Intelligence is disabled in China and the EU due to regulatory reasons.

iOS 18.1 introduces the initial set of Apple Intelligence features such as Writing Tools, Siri enhancements, Clean Up and Memory Movies in Photos, notification summaries, priority messages in Mail, and transcription summaries for phone calls.

Building upon the foundation laid by iOS 18.1, iOS 18.2 introduces generative image generation features for the first time. Image Playground allows users to create custom images from scratch using text prompts and theme suggestions in a cartoony style. Additionally, Image Wand can transform a rough sketch made with the Apple Pencil into a detailed image. Users can also create new emoji with Genmoji to share with friends via messages, as the Genmoji editor is seamlessly integrated into the standard system emoji keyboard.

iOS 18.2 also includes enhancements to Writing Tools, offering preset transformations along with a new text field that enables users to describe their desired changes with a freeform textual request. For example, users can request Writing Tools to make their document ‘sound more enthusiastic.’ Furthermore, ChatGPT is now integrated into Writing Tools, featuring a new Compose with ChatGPT interface.

ChatGPT is also integrated into Siri in iOS 18.2, allowing Siri to delegate requests to ChatGPT for tasks it cannot handle independently. For instance, if a user asks Siri to create an itinerary, Siri can pass the request to ChatGPT’s world knowledge models and display the response directly. Users must explicitly grant permission for Siri to use ChatGPT for the request, ensuring user privacy.

For owners of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18.2 introduces Visual Intelligence, enabling users to access a new viewfinder by pressing and holding the Camera Control on the lock screen. This feature allows users to quickly capture a photo to learn more about the subject.

All these features are also available in the beta versions of macOS 15.2 and iPadOS 18.2, providing developers with an early preview. Although Apple has not announced a specific release date for iOS 18.2, it is expected to be available before the end of the current year.

Looking ahead, there are still more Apple Intelligence features on the horizon. These include personal context awareness and in-app actions for Siri, as well as a new AI-enhanced priority notifications section on the iPhone lock screen. These features are anticipated to be introduced in early 2025.
