MINI Unveils GP Inspired Edition: A Closer Look at the Limited-Edition Models

Article Summary

  • The GP Inspired Edition, despite its name, is primarily a cosmetic package offered by MINI.
  • Available in limited quantities for the Cooper S and JCW models, it includes a range of standard equipment and John Cooper Works accessories.

MINI recently introduced the GP Inspired Edition, a special edition that hints at a more performance-oriented version but is, in fact, a visually enhanced model. This exclusive offering is currently being showcased in Japan, where customers can select either the five-door Cooper S or the three-door John Cooper Works.

The GP Inspired Edition vehicles are not true GP models; instead, they are upgraded with JCW accessories by MINI. Both models sport a striking Legend Grey exterior with a Chili Red roof and mirror caps, along with body stripes and unique C-pillar stickers depicting track layouts. Notable additions include winglets and a prominent roof spoiler at the rear, providing a sporty appearance.

Enhancing the exterior further are 18-inch JCW alloy wheels with red floating caps and tinted rear windows. The interior of the GP Inspired Edition boasts illuminated door sills, an anthracite headliner, and electrically adjustable front seats with a massage function. The vehicles also feature exclusive branding and badging throughout.

In Japan, MINI is offering a limited run of 145 units of the F65 Cooper S at a price of ¥5,870,000 (approximately $37,500) each. The F66 JCW model is even more exclusive, with only 45 units available at ¥6,060,000 ($38,800) per car, both equipped with Driving Assistant Plus.

Under the hood, the Cooper S houses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 201 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque, while the JCW variant delivers 228 hp and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Although MINI may consider reintroducing a genuine GP model in the future, the current focus remains on the GP Inspired Edition. This unique offering provides a glimpse into the possibilities of future high-performance variants, featuring distinctive design elements and potential power upgrades.
