Valve’s Crackdown on Clownface-Farming: The End of Steam Points for Community Awards
Valve Revamps Steam Community Awards System
Valve has recently implemented changes to the Steam community awards system in an effort to deter users from posting frivolous and negative content solely to earn Steam points. The new system no longer allows users to receive Steam points from others when they receive awards. Additionally, a new set of awards has been introduced to promote positivity within the community.
For those unfamiliar, Steam community awards are emoji stickers that users can attach to reviews to express a range of emotions, from disdain to enthusiasm. Previously, these awards served as a means to earn Steam points, which could be used to purchase profile pictures and backgrounds. This system inadvertently fostered a culture of posting low-quality content to attract awards.
Under the updated system, users will now receive a flaming chilli pepper as a token of recognition instead of Steam points. Valve has introduced 12 new community awards designed to replace the old ones, aiming to maintain a positive atmosphere within the community.
The new awards can be purchased using Steam Points, which are earned through game purchases. They can be used to show appreciation for various types of content within the Steam Community, such as user reviews, forum posts, artwork, and more.
Valve explained that the previous system of granting Steam points alongside awards led to a focus on attention-grabbing content rather than thoughtful and creative contributions. The revamped system aims to convey appreciation from viewers to content creators without the incentive of earning points.
Each of the new awards costs 500 Steam points and features a mix of neutral and overly sentimental designs. While some may find the designs lacking in substance, users are likely to interpret them in unique ways over time.
It is expected that Valve may reintroduce the original community award designs in the future, catering to nostalgia and user preferences. The evolution of the system reflects Valve’s commitment to fostering a positive and engaging community environment on Steam.
Looking ahead, the community may speculate on potential designs for a community award system for RPS comments, beyond the conventional choices of a rock, a piece of paper, and a shotgun.
