Visa is revolutionizing the field of artificial intelligence-powered commerce with the introduction of its Trusted Agent Protocol. This innovative security framework aims to address the challenge faced by retailers in distinguishing between legitimate AI shopping assistants and malicious bots that disrupt their websites.
Agentic commerce, the practice of consumers delegating shopping tasks to AI agents for product searches, price comparisons, and autonomous purchases, has seen a significant surge in recent times. To combat the rising threat of fraudulent activities by bots, Visa has developed the Trusted Agent Protocol to enable merchants to verify the authenticity and trustworthiness of AI agents browsing their sites.
According to data from Adobe cited by Visa, AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail websites has skyrocketed by over 4,700% in the past year. This exponential growth has posed a challenge for merchants relying on traditional bot detection systems, as they risk blocking legitimate AI shoppers along with malicious actors.
Visa’s Global Head of Growth, Rubail Birwadker, emphasized the need for additional tools to provide merchants with greater insight and transparency into agentic commerce activities. The Trusted Agent Protocol aims to mitigate risks such as ecosystem fragmentation and the proliferation of closed-loop models.
Enhancing Security through Cryptographic Verification
The Trusted Agent Protocol operates through a cryptographic trust handshake between merchants and approved AI agents. This three-step system ensures the authenticity and integrity of AI agents visiting merchant websites:
- Approved AI agents undergo vetting through Visa’s Intelligent Commerce program and receive a unique digital signature key for identity verification.
- When an approved agent visits a merchant’s site, it creates a digital signature containing information on Agent Intent, Consumer Recognition, and Payment Information.
- Merchants validate these digital signatures against Visa’s registry of approved agents to confirm the agent’s trustworthiness.
Visa designed the protocol to seamlessly integrate with existing merchant infrastructure without requiring extensive changes. Leveraging standards such as the HTTP Message Signature and Web Bot Auth, the protocol offers a no-code solution for merchants to enhance security without disrupting their checkout processes.
Collaboration and Compatibility in the AI Commerce Landscape
Visa collaborated with Cloudflare, a leading web infrastructure and security company, to develop the Trusted Agent Protocol. This partnership underscores the importance of cooperation across the web stack to address bot verification challenges effectively.
